When people try to gatekeep Dadaism, I respond with things that are direct quotes from 391, or I paraphrase them in ways anyone who's knowledgeable on the topic will understand. Never once has anyone called me on it. But I do get called mean names.
The thing I want to ask these people but never have is, "Shit dude, what part of 'there are no rules' do you not understand?" Even a hipster level understanding of Dada will tell you that it's not about aesthetics, but that's always the first place they go. Anti-art aesthetics!
If you think Dada is a photo filter, I don't know what to tell you. It could be, but you'll never be able to join the fun if you think that. No, it's a philosophy. A religion of apathy. Pure fucking expression, whatever that means to you, in the way that's natural for you.
"But dadaists never stole anything!" Bullshit. They stole the mona lisa and drew a mustache on it. The artform is literally called APPROPRIATION ffs. They challenged authorship, aura, meaning, and oh, yes, gatekeeping in general. So fuck you!
Dada considers smugness to be a literal crime against art. It is actively against the idea that art takes skill to produce, because ART IS ARBITRARY. The best Dadaist art is random, removing the artist as much as possible and lying about it when you don't. There's freedom in that.
If the anti-ai crowd actually understood the topic... I don't think they would like Dada very much. And they shouldn't. It's not for them. They are the bourgeoisie. The vaulted few. The privileged. And that's true for anyone running around screaming "they will not replace us!"
Dada says, "punch a nazi or anyone who acts like one."
Dada says, "fuck your definition of art."
Dada says, "that's mine now."
Dada says, "art is stupid"
