Documentation debt is still infrastructure debt

Remember that thing people used to say about documentation when they didn’t want to take responsibility for infrastructure or code?

“Yeah, I know it’s important… but we just have so much real work to do.”

Would you believe people still talk like this?

It’s true. But there will always be 90 seconds in your day to tell a machine to document your PRs, sync your Confluence pages with your spreadsheets, or track the status of your patches and logs.
There’s no excuse anymore.

Unless… you never really cared about documentation in the first place.
Some of these outfits (and we all know who they are) aren’t actually working harder, but they’re great at looking busy.

You see, information silos are the perfect con.

The execs don’t know better. All they see is a high ticket count and assume productivity.

Do you think they’d feel differently if they knew you were burning the house down?

I guess enterprise software’s always been this way.

It’s just louder now.

More obvious.
And so much easier to track.
