Ruby's not my favorite language, but I find it offensive that anyone would replace a perfectly good Rails application with an app written in Rust. Rust is just this towering monstrosity of a programming language. It hurts to work in.
It's also a poor choice for replacing Ruby.
If you're going to replace Ruby with anything, it makes more sense to replace it with Zig.
But... why replace it all when all you need is a decent compiler that screams like its tush is on fire?
Yes yes.
So what I'm doing this weekend is building a much faster Ruby compiler that'll make Rails apps faster and more memory efficient.
Started with CRuby, and I've been pushing Sol to think outside the default box.
9.5 hours in, and I'm already seeing 2.57x speed gains without requiring any changes to Ruby apps themselves.
Making a round of Fortran inspired upgrades to it.
This makes sense if you think about the way computation works in a dynamic programming language like this one.
We got this.
I think we'll pass 3x by morning.
I can do better.
More soon.
