Thinking sideways about hyper-connections

Here's the concept:

DeepSeek just put out a new paper on MhC, playing with the idea of Hyper-Connections; models that widen traditional residual links into richer multi-stream conduits and wrap them in a manifold constraint so that information doesn’t go off the rails as depth increases.

Classic hyper-connections expand the “lanes” of data traveling through a network... but without any kind of guiding topology those extra degrees of freedom can actually destabilize training at scale.

The manifold constraint projects the residual connection space onto a controlled geometric surface (a manifold) that preserves the identity mapping property which keeps gradients sane and the training stable.

Exciting, right?

Think of it like adding shape-preserving guardrails to a multi-lane highway.

The model still enjoys rich connectivity, but the flow of information doesn’t warp. Systematically, it suppresses the instability typical of wide, unconstrained residual flows, while letting the network explore more expressive internal representations.

In other words, in addition to being able to move vertically, the DeepSeek paper shows us how to use hyper connections to move information sideways the same way!
