The rhythm and coincidence of video collage

I've been thinking about the way I riff, especially on video content, and how the process seems really magical to me. The randomness of it all, making very few if any intentional cognitive decisions when I make a video collage. It's been bothering me, how I can't explain all of it.

I think a big part of it is just the way video in media works. The timing, the way cinema has this sort of... rhythm to it, for lack of a better way to describe it. I've spent a lot of time thinking about that.

And I've even taken college courses on it. If there was a degree in marketing psy-ops, I would almost know enough about the human factors side of things, to have one.

I understand this detail at a level so deep, I can't extricate it from my process. It's melted into who I am as an artist. Even when I intentionally turn my brain off.

Combine that with the fact that, non-cognitively, I'm great at math. My brain just does calculations like that. I can't do it on call, I can't control it, it just happens. And it works beautifully with trajectories and distance.

Even when I'm not making art videos, if I know what's in a piece of media, I can usually drag and drop it to exactly the place it needs to be, in order to work in context.

The rest of it is wild coincidence, resulting from topics I search on. Then little details that I add intentionally. Like when you see a standard piece of stock footage appear, that matches. A dog running, a river flowing, a woman sitting in a smoky bar at just the right moment.

But even still, as someone who's just watching one of my videos... you would never know any of that, and just assume that it's all perfectly intentional.
